In January 2023, members of All Saints Kooyong Anglican Church embarked on a retreat led by our Vicar Rev Kuncoro Rusman, in the breathtaking landscapes of Bali, Indonesia. This retreat proved to be truly a blessing, allowing us to come together and connect in the serene backdrop of Bali.

The week-long retreat was filled with a rich tapestry of activities, including reflective sessions, visits to local church services, visits to orphanages, and immersive experiences in Balinese villages. Each day began with our congregation participating in reflective sessions, centred around the theme of “Being a Christian in the Modern Era”. These insightful sessions were led by the local Bishop and dedicated Priests who imparted valuable lessons on navigating the challenges of modern life while upholding our Christian values.

Our journey also led us to several local churches, where we joined the congregation in worship, prayer, and listened attentively to the sermons delivered by the Priests. These shared moments of spiritual connection were truly heart-warming.

Visiting two orphanages in the Bangli and Badung regions of Bali was a touching experience. These orphanages provided a home to approximately 40 children aged between 11-19 years old. We had the privilege of hearing the children’s stories and testimonies, learning about the circumstances that led them to the orphanage and about their daily lives. One remarkable aspect that left a lasting impression on our members was the determination of these children. Many of them had voluntarily chosen to join the orphanages, seeking a chance for a better life. Despite hailing from impoverished backgrounds, some made the courageous decision to leave their families from as young as 7 years old, with the hope of accessing education, sustenance, clothing and shelter. The All Saints Kooyong congregation continue to extend a helping hand to these deserving children.

Our exploration of Balinese villages unveiled a rich array of traditional houses, cultural dances, and beautiful statues. These visits offered us profound insights into the lives of the Balinese people, showcasing their strong sense of community and cultural heritage.

Our journey to Bali was a divine opportunity to deepen our connection with God, share His grace, and become a source of blessing for others. We continue to maintain an ongoing connection with the Balinese churches and provide ongoing support to the orphanages. As we reflect on this transformative retreat, we are profoundly grateful for the blessing we’ve received and pray for God’s continued guidance and blessings for us all.

May God bless us all.
